Recently we have seen several high profile accounts compromised on Twitter, for example Fox News, a verified Twitter account tweeted that president Obama was dead on American independence day. People had no reason to believe this was a fake tweet and there was no sign of the account being hacked. The account was ‘verified’ meaning Twitter had ensured the account was real, something which is key to Twitter users.
People should be able to look at the verified sign on a Twitter account and be able to trust the source. This is the entire point of the verified logo, the instant people start to lose trust in this logo is when Twitter could start getting into trouble.
So does Twitter need extra security? In a word yes.
Twitter while large still needs to ensure that its users can safety use the service of risk losing them. Its not just fake tweets which are a problem, not long ago Simon Pegg’s official account was compromised and someone tweeted a link to a Paul screensaver. This actually turned out to be a virus and within a few minutes achieved a couple of thousand downloads. If this happens again people could start to lose trust in the service resulting in Twitters possible downfall.
We all know this isn’t an impossible event look st how big MySpace was just a few short years ago. Now the company is a constant joke amoung the whole community. Now what Twitter does I don’t know. Maybe add a passcode which is required to log in at a new location, or for corporate accounts to be updated from behind their corporate firewall only? Yes, I know these ideas are hard to implement and maybe there are better solutions out there and its still going to happen but it can at least be made more difficult.
I don’t dislike Twitter and this post isn’t to attack them, I’m actually a very avid Tweeter but I don’t want to start seeing the company losing its progress because of a few hackers and fake tweets.
Give us your opinion on the matter and how you think Twitter could improve its security.
